I do have some future posts to write concerning race, addiction, non-heterosexuality, father-daughter relationships, abortion, etc.

I know there are some women speaking out about the abuse women experience within marriage. There are so many areas which also need to be explored.

What are some topics or areas concerning the White fundamental evangelical culture you would like to have discussed?

Love it! Cannot wait to dive more into this topic! There does seem to be a distinct difference in how fathers and mothers are treated/viewed. Just thinking out loud and will have to do some further research on it- it seems as though there are some ties in how the patriarch system is being utilized. Many women experience shame for not doing their jobs and men can be absent in the family. Women within this culture tend to have more interaction with children, yet, there isn’t discussion how mothers impact our relationships, identity, and faith. However, in psychology, there use to be a school of thought that schizophrenia was developed out of having a double-bind/unhealthy relationship with mothers. Also, (I think this was discussed in the biblical womanhood and Jesus/John Wayne books) about how male children over identifying with mothers/females was the cause of developing homosexuality. There seems to be a view of women causing the major dysfunction and men are the saving humanity, through the established patriarch system. Will definitely keep this in mind as a future topic! Can’t wait to dive in!

I have been thinking about the women performance = respect… and part of me feels like respect doesn’t quite fit for me. Thinking out loud: It is almost like if women perform as expected, there is acceptance/belonging. Yet, the culture could also present it as respect, since the woman performing within her ascribed biblical womanhood expectations is elevated above the others as one to exemplify. There is a lack of pressure to confirm. A space where the woman is praise. However, this seems to also be a man perspective… as a woman in the culture, this doesn’t feel like respect. Idk- random thoughts for this morning 🤣 Love this dialog! Thanks Ana!!

@Naomi Norton I think you're so right. Respect isn't the right term for what I was trying to communicate. Acceptance/belonging fits much better. Maybe courtesy as well? For example, a big part of Evangelical masculinity is the idea of chivalry. Treating women honorably and protecting them. But based on the way those same men talk about feminists, or AOC, or Hillary Clinton, it's clear that their ideals of honor and courtesy only extend to the right kind of women. As soon as a woman breaks with traditional femininity in a way that offends Evangelical men, all bets are off, and instead of being the princess in the tower, to be adored and protected, she becomes the dragon that is a threat and must be destroyed. Women get a certain level of acceptance/courtesy by conforming, but as soon as they step out of bounds, the contract that protects them from evangelical men no longer applies. Very open to thoughts on this theory, but it looks to me like there's almost no equivalent experience for evangelical men. The only men that get the same level of ire from Evangelicals as progressive women do are gay men. (Because evangelicals associate male homosexuality with femininity, which makes gay men fair game to be hated the same way incorrectly feminine women are hated.) I feel like I'm rambling a little bit, but anyway, that's what I mean by women getting respect by performance, men by existence. Less about the technical definition of respect, more about community acceptance I guess?

I've been thinking a lot about the ways Evangelical culture idealizes both motherhood and fatherhood, but very differently. I think fatherhood is placed on a weird pedestal, and attributed with a lot of mystical spiritual power over the family and the kids in a way that motherhood isn't. E.g. I heard countless sermons talking about how our view of our earthly father shapes our conception of God, but never a single acknowledgement of how our view of our mother is just as important in shaping our conception of God, divine authority, etc.
